7th Annual UBC DEM Research Day - April 8, 2015

The 7th Annual Emergency Medicine Research Day took place today at the CFRI Chan Centre Auditorium at the BC Children's Hospital in Vancouver.  There were seven different tracks of research that kept the auditorium nearly full all day.  Even the breaks were extended this year which allowed for more time to catch the speakers to learn more about their research.

Dr. Neil Barclay presented early in the morning with his project on the Effect of a DTU on ED Length of Stay and Admissions at Two Hospitals.  We are also very proud of our resident, Dr. Anthony Bryson, who was at the podium speaking on Wireless Transmission of ECGs from ED Triage - A Cohort Study.  Both studies generated some great discussions from the audience.

It was also very nice to see so many medical students and residents at the podium this year.

  • Dr. Simon Jones (UBC CFPC-EM Residency Program) presenting on Variability in CTAS Scoring in Two Calgary Tertiary Care Hospitals
  • Drs. Chris Lipp & Adam Thomas (UBC RCPS-EM Residency Program) on In-Custody Mortality Following Conducted Energy Weapon Deployment
  • Dr. Mario Francispragasam (UBC RCPS-EM Residency Program) on Point of Care Ultrasound for Retinal Detachment in the ED
  • Dr. Brianne Budlovsky (UBC RCPS-EM Residency Program) on Adding a Physician to the 8-1-1 Line:  A Pilot Project

Medical Students

  • Ms. Elizabeth Purssell (UBC Doctor of Medicine Program) presenting on Coronary CT Angiography for Chest Pain Evaluation in ED Patients
  • Ms. Jessical McCallum (UBC Doctor of Medicine Program) on 64-slice CT vs MRI for Cervical Spine Clearance in Blunt Trauma
  • Mr. Ethan Reiner (UBC Doctor of Medicine Program) onPediatric Visits to Community Emergency Departments

Another highlight of the day was from the plenary speaker, Dr. James Ducharme.  Dr. Ducharme had the audience's full attention with his topic - How Do We Make Pain Management the Same Priority as Our Patients Do?
