Research Objectives:

Our research program adopts a multidisciplinary approach to improving the lives, health and care of Canadians living with SCI. The overall research question is:

  • Can cardiovascular health in individuals with chronic SCI be improved through optimized exercise and targeted education?

Our program integrates three projects, investigating three major components of understanding and preventing CVD, in order to answer four specific questions:

Project 1: Effects of exercise interventions on clinical markers of cardiovascular health of individuals with chronic SCI.

  • Does the type of exercise – upper- or lower-limb – dictate cardiovascular outcome?

Project 2: Effects of exercise on clinical and mechanistic markers of cardiovascular health in animal models of chronic SCI.

  • By what mechanisms does exercise influence cardiovascular function in chronic SCI?

Project 3: Effects of targeted education for health care providers on prevention and management of cardiovascular conditions in individuals with chronic SCI.

  • Does targeted education improve cardiovascular care for individuals with SCI?

Projects 1&3: Cost analysis of exercise interventions and education.

  • What are the economic implications of exercise and education designed to improve cardiovascular outcomes for chronic SCI?
